Eco-labels in 2008 at Casino

In 2008, the French group Casino inform its customers about the environmental impact of its products through new tags. Developed by the firm Bio Intelligence Service and validated by the French Agency environmental and energy management (ADEME), they will contain encrypted information and a color code and indicate the mass and CO2 content of the package (mass of greenhouse gases emitted to produce the packaging), recyclability and the distance traveled by food. This initiative will be phased in during 2008 3000 cover brand products and hundreds will be analyzed before the end of 2007.

regime "100 miles"

Quite a challenge, which is more fully aligned with the initiative Plane Red: two North American writers have launched the scheme "100 miles" (160 kilometers). The principle is simple: for one year, they have fed that food products to 160 miles away. More information here (in French) and here (official website in English). Given the relative extent of U.S. and Belgian territories, a transposition of the scheme home should not exceed 50 km. So who is ready to meet this challenge?

The miracle of New Zealand lamb

Carte blanche collective published in Le Soir
and Echo of April 6, 2007

That's it, the Easter holidays are upon us, with their leave or vacation. But also and especially with Easter eggs that the Easter Bunny came directly from Rome cast off in our gardens. Then, when to eat, we will taste the lamb ... New Zealand. And this, we 're in Brussels, Paris, Rome or Berlin. Indeed, across Europe, this lamb is currently offered in hundreds of millions of consumers at a ridiculously low price, far less than that of local lamb ("the premises" means any European origin), reaching a record of 5.30 € per kg in French hypermarkets (1).

And this is where the miracle of Easter, because one wonders how it is possible that such "quality meat" from a place of origin so far (18,700 km as the crow flies), including information services consumers contacted were unable to say or whether the good has come by plane or boat (2), is found in our European shelves so cheap.

We often hear that the price (very) cheap perishable goods imported from overseas is largely due to low wages in the countries of origin. This is certainly true, indeed, for Peru, Egypt, Indonesia, Kenya, Senegal and Ethiopia, respectively, from which we import asparagus, strawberries, shellfish, roses, tomatoes or beans, the most often by air, and where poverty is widespread, as countries were cited at least one third of the population living on less than two dollars a day. To some analysts and professionals, therefore, these massive imports are now rampant real lever for development for these countries. Let.

But what then of the New Zealand lamb? Indeed, New Zealand, ranked in the top 20 world countries with the best "human development index" (3), properly installed between Spain and Germany, is far from being part of developing countries. So how come she Export these animals at a price so low, in the absence of cheap labor, and including costs of transport over a distance that is approximately half a world tour? The question is open! And for us, citizens concerned about what falls into our base, we rely on the miracle and, most importantly, we wonder if all this is sustainable.

Indeed, any movement of goods has a significant cost, both financially and environmentally. Of course, a little over 5 gallons of oil for air transport (4) does not weigh very heavily in the balance when you know that kerosene costs much less than a liter of Spa (5). Of course, the cost of shipping is still much lower (about 30 times cheaper than the airline). But there is enormous compared to transport a locally raised lamb.

As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) met this week in Brussels to assess what the impacts of climate change on our societies, and we know from the outset that countries most vulnerable are the poorest, because they are unable to adapt to these changes Climate deep, we can ask questions.

Questions ... We realize that these few paragraphs pose without really providing answers. But is not that always the case when a miracle occurs?

The collective "Red Plane"

(1) From April 4 to 10, Crossroads offers leg of lamb to 5.55 € / kg in Belgium.
(2) According to information obtained from Carrefour and Delhaize, it appears that the mode of transport used to carry the New Zealand lamb currently proposed is a mixture of air (approximately 24 hours) and sea ( "three good weeks in refrigerated container" ) which, depending on opportunities, would "not affect the final price for the consumer" .
(3) Under the UN Programme Development .
(4) It takes approximately 5.6 liters of kerosene to transport one kilogram of goods from New Zealand.
(5) The ridiculously low price of kerosene largely explains why the transport of goods by air has increased from 1960 to 2006, from 2 to 150 billion ton-kilometers, an increase by 75!

Nys Unemployment Forget To File Claim In Nys

feestmaal Een van 41 kilogram CO2

Watching what is on our plates, is one of the many small acts of civic responsibility which we can reduce our environmental impact

De Morgen, 22 February 2007

The media, the public and politicians are becoming increasingly interested in the global warming and the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. In recent weeks I have the advertising brochures of my nearest hypermarket tried to fix a fine dinner to put together. Following is the result for eight people, and their number of kilometers each ingredient has traveled to Belgium, and the amount of CO2 in the transport kilogram produced. I especially selected ingredients that the airplane landed, because air produces an average of sixty times more CO2 than sea freight. Because

also count, I decorate the table with a beautiful bouquet of twenty roses. The beautiful flowers come by plane from Kenya (6550 km, 5.2 kg of CO2). Once settled, we can serve the asparagus soup with langoustines. The asparagus are flown straight from Peru (10,500 km, 12.5 kg of CO2) and langoustines, peeled and frozen by boat from Indonesia (14,000 km) argued. Note that in terms of CO2 is more interesting to lobster from Southeast Asia to buy than their counterparts who are caught off the coast of Scotland. A paradox. The Scottish creatures leave because of a distant boat trip to Thailand, where it is peeled and then return to Europe (22,000 km). This odyssey is very necessary because I - not just at Christmas but the rest of the year - my shelled crustaceans prefer to buy. I'm not alone: 70 percent of consumers choose the time savings.

After two excellent bottles of white Chilean Sauvignon (11,900 km) it is time for the main dish. Basically I want my guests with take anything exotic, so I have long hesitated between Springbok in Namibia (8300 km), kangaroo from Australia (16,700 km), ostrich from South Africa (8900 km), venison from New Zealand (18,700 km) and bison from Canada (5600 km). Because I can not choose, it is a simple steak and chips from us. The hypermarket is flown Argentine steak (11,300 km, 14.5 kg CO 2) 30 percent cheaper than Belgian Bleu-Blanc. That does not say no to. For the homemade chips I buy bioaardappelen with the truck coming from the south of France. The lettuce speaks English. I am pondering whether your steak and chips is a traditional Belgian dish you mention, while I bottles of excellent California Cabernet Sauvignon (8900 km) uncork. My wife has

made a delicious dessert: a fresh fruit salad with fruit only in the hypermarket in promotion is. Not scare: Nash Iperen from South Korea, mango, papaya, figs and Charentais from Brazil, passion fruit from Colombia, pomegranate from the United States, Israel strawberries, pineapples from Central America, cherries from Argentina, carom and fruits from Malaysia. We do two kiwis from New Zealand with an orange from South Africa and a Belgian apple, so we have every continent on our plates. As midnight approaches, it is still 10 degrees outside and my three year old son whines that Christmas can not be because he sees no snow, I make the sum of the dessert: a total distance of 126,000 kilometers and a bill of about 9 pounds of CO2. That calls for a bottle of white sparkling wine from Tasmania, an island south of Australia (17,100 km).

our feast, flowers and wine, has a total of 209,000 kilometers behind, more than five times the journey around the world. Accounted for 41.3 kilograms of CO2, equivalent to the emissions of a normal car that runs 258 km. The transport of less than 6 kg of food is therefore approximately 15 liters petrol cost!

With a beautiful holly bush as table decorations, a delicious pumpkin soup as a starter, the same steak and chips with salad, but with products from us, a fruit salad without strawberries, cherries and other fruit flown, and French wine, We had more than 80 percent C02 produced.

Watching what is on our plates, is one of the many small acts of civic responsibility which we can reduce our environmental impact. In 1960 represented the air freight transport 2 billion tons per kilometer. In 2006, 150 billion has become. And the share of air transport in CO2 emissions is increasing every year.

The supermarkets say they like us at our beck and call. If we in the winter, no more would buy cherries from Argentina, no strawberries from Israel and no blueberries from Chile, who were no longer in the shelves. We can together enforce a change without really having to sacrifice comfort.

But to consciously consume, we need an informed choice. There we need help. We therefore ask that politicians would do their legislative work and the distribution would require any logo on products to make (eg a red or a blue airplane boat) that would systematically and clearly demonstrate how our food is transported.

How Old Is A 3 Inch Goldfish

Red Card to Trends-Tendances

Red card to the weekly Trends Business Magazine. In an article released today, the journalist Christine Scharff uses our imagery without credit or even mention the Collective Petition pending. Not very elegant ...
In addition, the legend says "A red airplane at Tesco , while the No. 1 British supermarkets has never specified what color would the airplane on which he intends soon dress up the products it is important by air. Or how to force reality to which it sticks to the image you chose to publish ...
Finally, the label bears a logo that aircraft will be transient. As explained in detail Guardian, Tesco wants to develop a "CO2 label" more ambitious: it should reflect the full life cycle of each product. To achieve this, Tesco has announced its intention to fund researchers at Oxford University for which they are working on a system for measuring CO2 footprint "universally accepted and easily understood" . Tesco may soon realize its plans and be emulated worldwide.

The Collective "Red Plane" welcomes the positive (e-mail, news, comments on this blog, etc..) That follow the article "Christmas with the family or 15 liters of oil" , published in La Libre Belgique of January 30, 2007.
We are also pleased that Ecolo has quickly taken the ball by making a resolution asking the federal government:

1 / to establish a symbolic label that represents the type of transportation of the product sold;
2 / to launch a national awareness campaign on the issue of CO2 emissions due to transport of goods consumption;
3 / to raise the issue at European level.

We also eager to know what the position of the other three parties ( CdH , MR , PS) on this issue. In the meantime, continue to circulate the petition around you (in electronic or paper).
At this point, yes, when you sign the petition online, your confidentiality is guaranteed. Only the collective "Red Plane" had access to names and email addresses. is explained here . Ebay And Empty Box Scam

Petition for labeling clear the way Freight intercontinental

More and more frequently, fruits, vegetables, meats and other flowers from around the world we are offered in shops.

When these products are shipped to Belgium (or Europe) by air, the energy cost is extremely high, with CO2 emissions standards out of 60 times more than transport by sea.

For example, the only airline of one kilo ...
- of strawberries Israel emits 2.6 kg of CO2, equivalent to 1 liter of oil.
- of Peru's asparagus emits 8.4 kg of CO2, equivalent to 3.1 liters of oil.
- of beef from Argentina emits 9 kg of CO2 equivalent to 3.4 liters of oil.
- to lamb from New Zealand emits 15kg of CO2, equivalent to 5.6 liters of oil.

This practice is not new but in the current climate, it becomes challenging. I do not want to ban imports of fresh produce, but as a consumer, I wish I could do my choice knowingly .

That's why I appeal to democratic political parties in Belgium to set laws in this field and make distributors the application logo (a red airplane and a blue boat, for example) systematically and clearly indicating the mode of transport used for intercontinental transport of such goods.

This petition is made on the initiative of the Collective "Red Plane" made Fabrice Collignon (Economist, Liege), Pierre de Wit (architect, Cork), David Wolf (journalist, Liege), Pierre Ozer (Doctor of Science, Liege), Dominique Perrin (Doctor of environmental Flémalle), Sonia Veckmans (geographer, Yvoir) and Martin Willems (engineer, Rixensart).

Herpes On Chest And Arms?

family Christmas or 15 liters of oil ...

Place of global warming in the media, public concerns and political debate is growing, as is the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) atmosphere.

The week before Christmas, I husked the ads from my nearest supermarket to prepare the family meal as expected. And here is what I could cook up to eight people, in parentheses, the mileage between the country of production and Belgium as well as the kilograms CO2 emitted only for intercontinental air transport of the products purchased. The analysis focuses on the transportation by air because it emits, on average, 60 times more CO2 than transportation by sea.

First, to look pretty, I enthrone a beautiful bouquet of twenty roses in the center of the table of great days. The source of these beautiful flowers is Kenya and mode of transport is by air (6550 km, 5.2 kg of CO2).

Decorum well planted, so lets start with a cream of asparagus soup with prawns. The green vegetable comes directly from Peru by plane (10,500 km, 12.5 kg of CO2) and lobsters were fed once shelled and frozen, by boat from Indonesia (14,000 km). Note that, in terms of CO2 emissions, it is still better to buy prawns reared in Southeast Asia rather than the same crustacean caught in Scotland - what a paradox! Indeed, he once caught in European waters, will make an extraordinary journey by boat to Thailand where, when husked, it will return to the European market (22,000 km). Relocation due to the fact that I prefer, on the eve of Christmas just like the other 364 days a year, buy shelled crustaceans. And like 70% of consumers have opted for this time saving ...

After two bottles of Chilean Sauvignon Blanc (11,900 km) to pale yellow, we attack the main dish. Determined to offer exotic dishes my dear guests, I have long hesitated between the springbok - this beautiful antelope - Namibia (8,300 km), the Australian kangaroo (16,700 km), the ostrich of South Africa (8,900 km), the deer in New Zealand (18,700 km) and the Canadian bison (5,600 km). A little lost, I finally committed to a simple steak and chips, salad comforts of home. Under the title might be funny "it has for its Argentine" , my supermarket offers me a beef steak Argentine came by plane (11,300 km, 14.5 kg of CO2) at a price 30% lower than the White Belgian-Blue-... How can you resist? For the homemade chips, I buy potatoes labeled "organic" from the south of France by truck. As for the salad, it comes from Spain. Then the space of a moment, I wonder ... Why is it said that it is the traditional Belgian dish par excellence? But this trivial matter dissipates quickly because I have to quickly open bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon California (8,900 km), a marvel whose palate is round and full bodied.

And my wife who takes care of the dessert as expected. A fruit salad made with only fresh fruits found in the store promotion. Brace yourself, it is nashi pears from South Korea, mangoes, papayas, figs and melon Charentais Brazil, passion fruits from Colombia, grenades of the United States, strawberries Israel Central American pineapple, cherries from Argentina and carambola in Malaysia. We decided to add two Kiwis from New Zealand, an orange Africa South Belgian and an apple so that all continents are represented in the same container. Obviously, as we approach the stroke of midnight, he is still 10 ° C outside and my three year old son tells me it's not Christmas yet, since there was snow, a serves as a cost: a total distance of 126,000 kilometers and a bill of approximately 9 kg of CO2 emitted. Thereupon I uncorks a bottle of sparkling white from Tasmania, an island south of Australia (17,100 km).

Ultimately, flowers and wine included, the total distance traveled by all these products is 209,000 kilometers, more five trips around the world, with emissions of 41.3 kg of CO2. This equates to CO2 emissions of a conventional vehicle covering the distance of 258 kilometers, or approximately 15 liters of gasoline for less than six pounds of food!
Yet, with a nice bouquet of holly at the center of the table, a delicious pumpkin soup as a starter, followed by the same steak and chips, salad with local produce, fruit salad without strawberries, cherries come by air and ... French wines we would decrease more than 80% of CO2 emissions from transport.

sure that we put on our plates is one of many small acts as citizens we can do to reduce our environmental footprint. Freight transport by air was 2 billion tons-kilometers carried in 1960. In 2006 this figure rose to 150 billion. And the share of CO2 emissions due to air transport is increasing every year. A supermarket

chanting "Live like you want" , another proclaims "And everything becomes possible" . We are convinced. And if we as consumers do not buy more cherries from Argentina, Israel strawberries or blueberries from Chile in winter, they do offer more. Together we can force change. And all this without really losing our quality of life comfortable.

But if the consumer finds it, he must be helped to make their choice knowingly. We therefore appeal to politicians to legislate in this area and the application requires distributors logo (a red airplane and boat blue, for example) systematically and clearly indicating the mode of transport used for intercontinental transport of these goods.
